Care of Furniture. Our furniture is finished with one of the most durable finishes that today’s technology can produce. However, it is important not to lose sight of the fact that is made of solid wood, and when a hot dish or a cup of hot liquid is placed directly on the surface, moisture may be drawn from the wood and be trapped under the topcoat, causing a ring or discoloration to form. Also, the finish and the wood under it may be scratched and dented. These things do not mean that the furniture or the finish is defective; rather, it is indicative of the fact that care must be exercised in the use of solid wood furniture. We offer the following suggestions to help you care for your furniture and get the maximum enjoyment from it:

Heat and moisture: Do not put pots, pans, or casserole dishes that come directly from the stove or oven on a table. Transfer foods into serving dishes or platters. Then use a trivet that allows air to flow between the table and the dish. Be cautious of trivets that have metal feet that can transfer heat to the table. As an added precaution you may want to put a hot pad on top of the trivet. Avoid serving dishes that produce heat such as chafing dishes or bread baskets that contain heated stones. Use saucers or coasters with cups of coffee. While not required, a made to fit table pad covered by a table cloth could save you a lot of trouble. Cold drinks usually don’t cause trouble unless left for a very long time, but coasters couldn’t hurt.

Scratches: When writing, place a magazine or pad under your paper to keep from making an indentation on the table. Remember flower pots can have unglazed bottoms that can scratch the table. Keys, rivets on pocketbooks, and other metal items can produce fine scratches.

Fading: Strong sunlight can fade the color of wood stains. Avoid leaving lamps and pots in the same spot on a table for long periods of time as they will block fading in that spot leaving a dark ring. Be careful with items placed near windows, use drapes where you can.

Wood Maintenance: Wood polish or wax is generally not needed since it would not get to the wood, rather it would lay on top of the finish. We recommend cleaning with a damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth. In the event you get fine scratches on the finish you could try rubbing lightly with “0000” steel wool and then using paste wax. Rub with the grain and do not rub hard, hard rubbing will turn the finish cloudy. Deep scratches can be colored in with touch up markers and filled with furniture crayons. These can be found at hardware stores. Cloudy marks from heat damage can not be fixed, only complete refinishing will cure them.

Non Warranty Repairs: We can repair our furniture when it is not covered by the warranty. In these cases we charge labor and materials to do the repairs at our cost. We do not earn a profit on repair work.
