ABOUT OUR BARNWOOD COLLECTION

Our Barnwood furniture is made of reclaimed timbers from 100 to 200 year old American barns.

Wood Color

The wood is usually White Pine or Southern Yellow Pine, but may be other woods as well or a combination of woods.

We do not stain this wood. We simply apply a clear finish and allow the natural color of the wood to show. One hundred plus years of age gives the wood colors that no stain can replicate. No two pieces of wood are the same and so there is considerable variation in the color. Places where the wood is cut or milled in the furniture building process will be lighter.

Knots and other "defects"

The beauty of this wood is the "defects" It will have worm holes, splits, cracks, dents, chips, knots, knot holes, other holes, old nail holes, holes from new nails used to build the furniture (which we do not fill), rough spots, splinters, wooden pegs thru the boards (from pegged barn construction), and bits of old paint in some cracks. We use all of the wood that is recovered from the barns. This may include boards that were used for recent repairs to the barns and is "new". We will use this wood in areas that are less seen such as the insides of drawers. It is typically only a board or two in a piece of furniture and typically occurs in only one out of ten pieces of furniture. It is part of the history of the barn.

Love it like your children

You may hope for a daughter, but when you get a son you love him just the same. Barnwood furniture is much the same. There is no predicting the wood you will get in a piece of our Barnwood furniture. Like a child, it will be like no other. We cannot accept orders with requests for certain wood grain or characteristics. If you are not sure Barnwood is for you, you may want to consider one of our pieces made from new wood. As with all of our products you may return an item for any reason within 30 days for a full refund. The cost of the return shipping must be paid by you and the item must be in the original packaging.

Construction

In keeping with the rustic nature of this product we use nailed construction for our Barnwood pieces. This includes the drawers. (All of our new wood pieces have dovetailed drawers). We countersink the nails, but do not fill the holes. Our Barnwood tables have removable massive legs. The legs are attached with a metal bracket to extra heavy 2" thick aprons that are reinforced with heavy bracing and cross bracing. Our Barnwood table tops have breadboard ends. This is an 18th century technique where a narrow board is attached perpendicularly to the main top boards to keep the top flat. Humidity changes will cause an offset in these boards of up to 1/4 inch at times and is not considered a defect.
